Nizhegorodsky Engineering Plant (member of Association of Oil and Gas Equipment Manufacturers) is involved in a pilot project to build the world’s first floating nuclear power plant for the city of Severodvinsk. The company will manufacture two KLT-40S reactors. The reactors have been designed by the Afrikantov design bureau. The contract to build the new atomic plant has been signed between Rosenergoatom and Sevmash. The floating power station is to be commissioned in 2010.
The floating nuclear power plant is a vessel of 144 meters long and 30 meters wide. It will have water displacement of 21,5 thousand tons, capacity of 70 megawatt, thermal capacity of 140 gigacalories. This will be enough for both the city-forming enterprise of Sevmash and a megacity of 150000, such as Severodvinsk. Estimated cost of the floating nuclear power plant with two reactors KLT 40-S exceeds 9 billion rubles. The project is funded by Rosenergoatom through Sevmash that will manufacture the block. India, Indonesia, China and Australia have already shown a keen interest in the main station commissioning that is planned for 2010, because the nuclear power station will be able to supply electricity and heat to a megacity and to desalinate sea water. The station’s daily desalinating capacity is 100-400 thousand tons of fresh water.
