Drilling waste from the Vostok Oil project will be processed into building material

31.08.2021

"Rosneft" received a patent for the invention of the "green" drilling cuttings processing technologies at the Vostok Oil project. The rationalization project for the processing of drilling waste into a highly environmentally friendly building material has already brought more than 2 billion rubles of economic effect to the enterprise. More than 212,000 tons (139,000 cubic meters) of drill cuttings have already been disposed of at the Vankor, Suzun, and Tagul fields.

As part of the Rosneft-2022 strategy ; the Company's subsidiaries pay special attention to environmental protection in the course of their production activities. The use of "green" technologies – at the heart of the field development of the new northern project "Vostok Oil". At the moment, the company has begun work on obtaining two more patents.

The technology is based on the principle of waste-free production, organized directly on the well pad. The sludge generated during drilling is mixed with cement, lime, gypsum and sand. This composition makes the resulting soil safe for the environment. Calcium, coming from the addition of lime, improves the physical properties of the soil, strengthening its structure, and has a positive effect on the activity of microflora, increasing the content of organic matter in the soil, increases the productivity and resistance of plants to any external factors.

The innovative product is used at the Vostok Oil fields ; when filling roads, erecting sites for new production complexes, as well as in the process of reclamation. The recycled soil can also be used as a substitute for natural soils and other reclamation materials.

The safety of the production process and the compliance of the soil with all necessary requirements have been confirmed by the State Ecological Expertise. The license obtained as a result of inspections by Rosprirodnadzor, allows oil companies to expand the possibilities of using their own drilling cuttings disposal technology for another fourteen newly licensed facilities located on the territory of the Vankor, Tagul, Suzun and Lodochnoye fields.

"Vostok Oil" - the largest project not only of the Russian, but also of the world economy. The resource base is over 6 billion tons of premium low-sulfur oil.
The Vostok Oil project includes 52 licensed areas in the north of the Krasnoyarsk Territory and in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, where 13 oil and gas fields are located, including the Vankor field (includes the Vankor, Suzun, Tagul and Lodochnoye fields) and the Payakhsky cluster. Since 2009, 5 deposits discovered in Taimyr – Baikalovskoye, Gorchinskoye, Ichemminskoye, Novoogenny and in December 2020 – the unique Zapadno-Irkinskoye field.
