VNIIAES checks the security of Russian nuclear power plants from cyber threats

Specialists of JSC "VNIIAES" started an audit of security systems for automated process control systems (APCS) in relation to computer attacks at operating NPPs. Until the end of 2020, audits will be held at Balakovo, Beloyarsk, Rostov, Kursk and Smolensk nuclear power plants.

NPP for 2017-2020" Rosenergoatom Concern JSC, on the basis of federal legislation in the field of the use of atomic energy, federal legislation in the field of ensuring the security of critical information infrastructure of the Russian Federation, as well as the requirements for the information security system in the APCS.
Each NPP will be visited by a group of specialists from the Competence Center for APCS cybersecurity, previously created on the basis of JSC VNIIAES. According to the head of the audit team Denis Babaev, based on the results of the audits, conclusions will be made on the degree of compliance of the APCS security systems with respect to computer attacks with the requirements of regulatory documents, and recommendations for improvements will be formed.
In 2019, similar audits were carried out at Kalininskaya , Kola, Leningrad and Novovoronezh NPPs.

JSC "VNIIAES" is a system integrator of Rosenergoatom Concern JSC; on scientific and technical support and ensuring the operation of nuclear power plants in accordance with the relevant regulatory documents. JSC "VNIIAES" operates on the basis of the Charter, Rostekhnadzor licenses, Quality Assurance Programs.
The Institute performs work at the sites of nuclear power plants, at the Crisis Center of Rosenergoatom Concern JSC, subdivisions of the central office, and the technical directorate of the concern. The Institute has a developed technical base. There are test sites for testing design solutions for automated process control systems for new power units, testing human-machine interfaces, systems for analyzing and summarizing NPP operating experience, a test site for developing and manufacturing simulators for training and maintaining the qualifications of NPP personnel, benches and installations for performing work on radiation safety, diagnosing the operation of equipment, performing maintenance and repair work. Complete computerization of workplaces has been carried out.

More than 700 specialists work at the institute, more than 60 of them have a degree. Many of the employees are leading and recognized experts in their fields of nuclear power plant technology, are members of scientific communities, IAEA experts. JSC "VNIIAES" there is an educational and methodological center вЂ“ EMC VNIIAES, which trains and maintains the qualifications of personnel of nuclear power plants and supporting enterprises. The Institute is licensed by Rostekhnadzor and accredited by Rosenergoatom Concern JSC. In 2005, the quality management system of JSC "VNIIAES" certified for compliance with the requirements of the international standard ISO 9000, in 2007 the EMS was certified for compliance with the requirements of the ISO 19000 standard, which makes it possible to increase the competitiveness of the institute in the domestic and foreign markets.
