The purpose of the first joint expedition of researchers from Russia and China will be to study the Russian Arctic shelf of Siberia. Scientists plan to carry out a number of studies in the field of marine geology, topography, physical oceanography, marine chemistry and a number of other areas.
RAS and the National Laboratory for Marine Science and Technology Qingdao (China) during a meeting held as part of the meeting of the BRICS working group on oceanology and polar technologies. The expedition will be one of the pilot events of the Sino-Russian Arctic Research Center established in April 2019, TASS informs.
The purpose of the first joint expedition will be to study the Russian Arctic shelf of Siberia as the largest shelf system in the world, connecting the Arctic and Pacific oceans and being a kind of natural "ice generator". Scientists plan to carry out a number of studies in the field of marine geology, topography, physical oceanography, marine chemistry and biology in the area of ​​the previously unexplored Eurasian basin of the Laptev Sea.
The researchers plan to obtain data during the expedition on marine optics, currents, bottom sediments, phytoplankton, microorganisms, distribution of radionuclides in the water column. As well as information on greenhouse gases that can be used to establish the relationship between the natural transformation of the Arctic and global climate change,
