Routine maintenance of Unit No. 1 of Kursk NPP‑2: tasks and deadlines

At power unit No. 1 of Kursk NPP‑2 with a VVER reactor unit‑On June 1, 2026, a short-term maintenance repair was started. The planned work is designed for about two weeks and includes diagnostics and preventive maintenance aimed at maintaining high reliability of the unit. This was reported by the press service of the station.
Over 500 employees of the plant and contractors are involved in the work. Their tasks include the inspection and maintenance of the key and auxiliary equipment of the reactor and turbine shops, as well as the cleaning of heat exchange elements. Upon completion of the control cycle, the unit will resume electricity supply to the grid.
Short-term repairs at the start of operation perform important functions: running-in of components, identification and elimination of hidden defects, adjustment of operating modes and formation of a reliable base for further operation. The plant&s management emphasizes that timely prevention minimizes the risk of unplanned downtime, helps maintain production volumes and reduces the likelihood of penalties in the capacity market.
The VVER reactor‑The TOY belongs to the III+ generation, has a capacity of 1,255 MW, passive security systems, enhanced protection from external influences and digital process control. These characteristics enhance operational performance, but require close monitoring during the commissioning period, when checking both digital and mechanical systems is especially important.
Kursk NPP‑2 is being implemented as part of the National Project "New Nuclear and Energy Technologies" and today remains the only site in the country with a VVER‑TOI project. In the future, the construction of four units will replace the outdated RBMK‑1000, increase the stability of the region&s energy supply and ensure stable electricity supplies for industry, the social sector and the population. In addition, the new facilities will create jobs and contribute to the socio‑economic development of the region.
Since the first synchronization in December 2025, Power unit No. 1 has generated about 2.4 billion kWh; ongoing repairs are aimed at consolidating these results and collecting data to adjust operational regulations and maintenance practices during the further implementation of the VVER‑TOI project.
