Reliability of backbone networks: SVSESS has completed the overhaul of the key section of the Udmurtskaya — Shchelokov 500 kV overhead line

The Srednevolzhskselelektrossetstroy company (SVSESS) reported on the completion of major repairs of the 80-kilometer section of the Udmurtskaya — Shchelokov 500 kV high-voltage power transmission line. The facility, located in the Nizhnekamsk region of Tatarstan, is a critically important link in the Ural energy system, providing transit power between the regions, the company&s press service said. The Udmurtskaya — Shchelokov highway with a total length of more than 900 km requires increased attention to the technical condition. The work carried out was aimed at radically improving operational reliability and eliminating defects identified during routine diagnostics.
SVSESS specialists have implemented a set of measures to upgrade insulation and lightning protection systems:
• Replacement of the lightning protection cable: a new element with improved wear resistance characteristics is installed.
• Insulation modernization: defective insulators on anchor and intermediate supports have been replaced.
• Revision of spark gaps: key components of surge protection have been restored.
The renovation work was complicated by geographical and climatic factors. The highway passes through swampy terrain and active farmland, and carrying out work in winter required logistics in conditions of deep snow cover and intersections with busy highways.
The heaving method became the key technological solution. The use of specialized traction and braking machines and a system of rolling rollers allowed:
- To carry out installation without contact of the wire with the ground (minimizing damage).
- Provide precision control of the tension force.
- Reduce the time required for work in technically difficult areas.
Stages of the project implementation
- Preparatory stage
- Replacement of garlands with rolling rollers without disconnecting the line
- Dismantling of worn elements and cable
- Pulling of a new lightning protection cable by the method of gravity
- Restoration of structural components and spark gaps
- Final parameter adjustment and commissioning
Competencies and results
A mobile team of 12 highly qualified specialists was involved in the project. Despite the harsh conditions, SVSESS has kept up with the established schedules, confirming its readiness to work at facilities of ultra-high voltage class (500 kV).
The implementation of the project guarantees stable operation of the energy hub and increases the stability of capacity flows in Tatarstan and adjacent regions of the Urals.
