Indian Government initiates large-scale offshore oil and gas exploration program

20.08.2025

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced the launch of an ambitious government initiative to explore deep-sea oil and gas resources. The statement was made during the celebrations dedicated to the National Independence Day. The new strategic program provides for a comprehensive assessment of the hydrocarbon potential of the Indian territories. Special emphasis is placed on the development of offshore areas with extreme drilling depths.
This initiative is critically important for national energy security. India holds the third position among global consumers of petroleum products. At the same time, the republic imports over 85% of the required amount of "black gold". Own production covers only a small proportion of domestic needs. Exploration activity in the country is showing steady growth. The scale of search operations in the Andaman Sea has significantly increased. National corporations ONGC and Oil India are drilling wells at record depths - up to five kilometers below the seabed.
The Indian leadership is actively attracting international partners to develop hydrocarbon deposits. Extensive concession areas have been offered to Russian energy companies. The total area of sedimentary basins allocated for exploratory drilling is 200 thousand square kilometers.
Experts note the high potential of the region&s offshore fields. Deep-sea exploration opens up prospects for the discovery of large reserves of natural gas and oil. The successful implementation of the program will significantly strengthen the energy independence of one of the largest economies in Asia.
