Titanium needles in drilling: Gazprom Neft increased oil inflow by more than 30%
13.08.2025
Gazprom Neft specialists have successfully tested an innovative system for extracting hydrocarbons in difficult geological conditions. The unique complex, developed jointly with partner companies, was the first such solution in the country. The revolutionary technique opens up access to narrow oil-bearing layers located near aquifers and gas domes. Traditional methods of extracting hard-to-recover reserves are powerless here. Hydraulic fracturing creates cracks that extend far beyond the boundaries of the target reservoir.
The engineers applied a lateral branch from the main borehole. Ultra-thin titanium structures were used. The material demonstrates exceptional strength with minimal weight. The corrosion resistance of titanium exceeds that of standard alloys by several times. The oil and gas service in Russia has received an alternative to expensive hydraulic fracturing. The new approach eliminates the need for specialized equipment, chemicals, and wedging materials. In isolated fields where classical hydraulic fracturing is ineffective, the drilling accuracy increases many times.
Pilot tests were conducted in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug. Titanium needles with a diameter of 12 millimeters drilled 54 additional barrels. The inflow of hydrocarbons increased by 35 percent! The results exceeded the expectations of the developers. The Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug will be the next region of application. The largest reserves of "complex" oil are concentrated here. Traditional mining methods show low profitability in such areas.
Experts note the strategic importance of the development. Import substitution in the oil and gas sector is becoming particularly relevant. Domestic technologies ensure independence from foreign suppliers of equipment and services.
Titanium drilling opens up prospects for the development of previously inaccessible deposits. Geologically complex structures contain billions of tons of hydrocarbons. Their involvement in the development will strengthen the country&s energy security for decades to come.
