The Russian coal industry is on the verge of a systemic crisis
15.07.2025
An alarming situation is developing in the Russian coal industry: more than fifty enterprises are shutting down or teetering on the brink of bankruptcy. Deputy Energy Minister Dmitry Islamov presented the alarming statistics at a meeting of the Federation Council Committee on Economic Policy. The representative of the department stressed the catastrophic state of the coal mining industry.
"In the so—called red zone, these are enterprises that have been stopped or are on the verge of being stopped, there are currently 51 enterprises, that is, mines and mines," Mr. Islamov said (quoted by RIA Novosti).
The financial losses of the industry over the past year amounted to 112.6 billion rubles. The figures demonstrate the scale of the problems in the sector. Production figures are also declining. In January-May of this year, production volumes decreased by one million tons compared to the same period of the previous year.
The Ministry of Energy predicts further deterioration of the situation. The expected losses of coal companies will reach 300-350 billion rubles by the end of the year. The crisis has a negative impact on investment activity. Investments in the coal industry will fall below the 2024 figure of 248 billion rubles.
The problems of the coal mining industry are related to several factors. International sanctions have limited the export opportunities of Russian manufacturers. The decline in global demand for coal is exacerbating the situation. The transition of many countries to alternative energy sources is reducing sales markets. The geographical location of many deposits makes logistics difficult. The distance from ports increases transportation costs and reduces the competitiveness of products.
The technological backwardness of some enterprises requires significant investments in modernization. The high cost of upgrading equipment becomes unbearable for unprofitable companies.
The social consequences of the crisis will affect thousands of workers. The closure of enterprises will lead to an increase in unemployment in regions with a single-industry economy.
The government is considering various measures to support the industry. Debt restructuring programs and government guarantees for key enterprises are being discussed.
