On the prospects of the petrochemical industry in cooperation between Russia and India
11.07.2025
Russian and Indian companies consider the petrochemical industry as a key area for strengthening economic ties. Andrey Sobolev, representative of the Russian diplomatic corps in India, identified the petrochemical sector as a priority area for the development of business relations between the two countries.
The diplomat emphasized that Russia has demonstrated the ability to rapidly increase trade turnover with its Indian partners. The country is actively creating fresh commercial ties. At the same time, there is an assessment of opportunities for expanding mutually beneficial cooperation in the long term.
However, in order to overcome barriers in a bilateral partnership, it is necessary to create transparent rules of the game. These rules should be clear to entrepreneurs in both countries. Specialized departments of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation and trade representative offices are engaged in solving this problem. They work closely with Indian regulatory authorities and ministries.
Sobolev stressed the importance of transforming trade relations:
"Analyzing the structure of mutual trade and the nature of Russian exports to India, it becomes clear that a transition from the sale of unprocessed raw materials to its deep processing is required directly on the territory of the partner country. We are talking specifically about the petrochemical industry. Relations of privileged strategic alliance have been established between our states. This is supported by a powerful infrastructure of interstate cooperation and corporate contacts. Such a framework greatly facilitates the process of negotiating, finding new points of economic growth and concluding large commercial contracts."
Experts note that the petrochemical industry has great potential for Russian-Indian cooperation. India is experiencing a growing need for petrochemical products for its rapidly developing economy. Russia has a rich raw material base and advanced processing technologies. The creation of joint ventures in this area can bring significant mutual benefits to both sides.
