Novak's forecast: in a quarter of a century, Russia will lead energy supplies to Asia
13.05.2025
Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak revealed Russia's ambitious plans to increase its energy presence in Asia. By 2050, the country aims to become a key supplier of oil and gas to Asian countries. Currently, the Russian Federation is one of the world's top three oil producers and exporters. In his publication for the Energy Policy magazine, Novak emphasized the need to expand the transport system. This concerns the construction of new pipelines, modernization of ports and railways. The Russian authorities have set the goal of returning annual oil production to 540 million tons and maintaining this figure until the middle of the century.
The Russian oil sector has set a course for technological independence. By 2027, the industry plans to almost completely abandon foreign supplies of equipment and technology. Moreover, the country is preparing to enter the international market with its own technological solutions and equipment.
The gas sector will focus on the domestic market. Priority will be given to meeting the needs of the population, industrial enterprises and the transport sector. According to Novak, domestic demand for gas will increase by 19% by 2036 compared to 2023 figures. By the middle of the century, this growth will already be 35%.
The Price Index Center published data for April. The shipment of Russian oil through ports reached the December 2024 level - 448 thousand tons daily. Compared to March, the figure increased by 9.1%. This indicates the recovery of the industry after the introduction of American sanctions, which affected more than 180 tankers.
Significant attention is paid to the refining sector. The oil refinery modernization program provides for the launch of 48 new units. This will achieve the yield of light oil products in the amount of 72% by 2036.
Petrochemical production will also receive a powerful boost. It is planned to double the capacity for the production of large-tonnage polymers by 2036.The share of light hydrocarbon feedstock in the production of petrochemical products will increase to 45%.
The gas chemical industry is developing due to the introduction of domestic technologies. A special resource base is allocated for this. By 2050, it is planned to launch about 10 new gas chemical complexes. This will increase gas consumption by about 20 billion cubic meters.
"The development of mechanical engineering in the petrochemical industry and the production of liquefied natural gas will ensure technological independence and make it possible to export Russian technologies," Novak noted.
The strategic plans include the creation of our own technologies for the production of seamless pipes and large-diameter pipes. Russia also intends to strengthen cooperation with friendly countries to develop gas infrastructure, conclude long-term contracts and organize swap deliveries.
