Brussels Develops Ban on Russian Gas Purchases Until 2027

05.05.2025

The European Commission is preparing a package of restrictive measures aimed at completely stopping gas supplies from Russia by the end of 2027.
In June, the EU leadership plans to announce a radical step - a course towards a complete cessation of the purchase of Russian energy resources. The new policy will affect existing contracts and prevent the conclusion of new ones. Short-term gas deals will be banned earlier - by the end of 2025. The documents of the European Commission, which will be presented in Strasbourg on Tuesday, contain clear intentions. Next month, European officials will announce an initiative to stop buying all types of natural gas from Russia. The restrictions will cover both gas transported through pipelines and LNG delivered by tankers under long-term agreements. According to the plan, the measures will come into force until the end of 2027.
This decision continues the EU's course towards energy independence and diversification of supplies after the outbreak of the Ukrainian conflict. Over the past two years, the share of Russian gas in European imports has already fallen significantly - from 40% to about 15%. European countries are actively developing alternative energy sources. Imports of LNG from the United States, Qatar and other countries are increasing. Wind and solar power plants are being built at an accelerated pace. Many countries are reconsidering their attitude to nuclear energy.
