In 2024, generating companies again postponed the modernization of old thermal power plants. According to Kommersant, eight projects with a total capacity of 2.5 GW received a deferment. Most of them took advantage of the right to postpone the launch for a year without giving reasons; no fines are provided for this. Analysts note that the investment component of modernization projects may disappear over time.
Based on the results of 2024, generating companies shifted the modernization dates of eight power units under the modernization program for old thermal power plants, Kommersant calculated based on the actual launch schedule. The total capacity of the postponed projects is 2.5 GW, CAPEX is 23.8 billion rubles. By the end of 2024, the generating companies were supposed to complete the modernization of 17 thermal power plants with a capacity of 3.5 GW, but in fact, ten updated power units with a capacity of 1.8 GW were launched (taking into account previously postponed projects).
According to the commissioning schedule, Inter RAO may shift the launch of the updated 800 MW power unit of the Nizhnevartovsk GRES from the end of 2024 to May 2026.
