The coal industry is in severe crisis
17.01.2025
Coal exports from Russia in 2024 amounted to 195 million tons, according to a review by the analytical agency Argus (Vedomosti has a copy). This is 8% less than a year earlier. According to the agency, Russian companies have significantly reduced coal supplies to China, South Korea and Turkey (Argus does not provide volumes of supplies to these countries), losing their share in these markets to competitors – mainly to suppliers from Australia and Colombia.
Some large Russian coal producers, such as Kuzbassrazrezugol, sought to offset the fall in exports by increasing supplies to the domestic market, where demand has grown due to higher electricity consumption, the review says.
